One of the most magical experiences I’ve ever had in Kenya was horseback riding at Sosian Lodge. As someone who has always loved horses, riding at Sosian was like a dream come true. There’s an authenticity in the Samburu’s way of life that makes you rethink what’s truly important.
Staying at Kalepo Camp added a layer of luxury and tranquility to my northern Kenya adventure. Tucked away in Northern Samburuland surrounded by the majestic Matthews Range, Kalepo is a stunningly intimate camp and feels like it was designed for those who crave a deeper connection with nature. Staying at Kalepo felt like stepping into a serene oasis. The camp’s earthy tones and thoughtful design blend seamlessly with the landscape, and the staff’s attentiveness made me feel like family. One evening, as I sat with my feet in the river enjoying a refreshing sundowner, under a canopy of stars, I couldn’t help but reflect on the profound beauty of this region — both its landscapes and its people. Close Encounters with Elephants in Tsavo (Sheldricks re-integration unit)
A truly unforgettable experience I had in Kenya was at the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust’s re-integration unit in Tsavo. I have been lucky to visit both the Ithumba and Voi Integration units, where I had the rare opportunity to get up close to elephants that had been rescued as orphans, cared for in the Nairobi Nursery and are now slowly being re-integrated back into the wild. Standing just a few feet away from these magnificent elephants, was both humbling and awe-inspiring. Watching them interact with their keepers, their deep intelligence and emotional complexity became evident. The bond they share with the people who care for them is extraordinary, a testament to the Trust’s dedication to giving these animals a second chance at life in the wild.
The re-integration process is remarkable to witness. As the young elephants grow, they are gradually reintroduced to the wild, often forming bonds with wild herds nearby. Seeing them practice behaviors they will need in their natural environment — from foraging to dust bathing — made me appreciate the incredible effort it takes to transition these animals back to where they belong. Being part of this journey, even as an observer, felt profoundly meaningful. It’s a reminder of the resilience of nature when given the right support.
What makes this experience even more unique is its setting in Tsavo, a landscape as wild and untamed as the elephants themselves. The vastness of the park, with its iconic red earth and ancient baobabs, provides a stunning backdrop for these moments. As I stood in that timeless wilderness, listening to the low rumbles of the herd communicating, I couldn’t help but feel a deep connection to something much larger than myself. For anyone with a passion for wildlife and conservation, a visit to the Sheldrick re-integration unit is an experience that stays with you long after you leave. It’s a rare chance to witness the profound impact of human care on wild lives and to be inspired by the possibility of coexistence.
