Kigali Genocide Memorial
No visit to Rwanda would be complete without a visit to the Kigali Genocide Memorial. Which, through education and peace-building, honours the memory of the more than one million Rwandans killed in 1994. Three permanent exhibitions and burial gardens form part of a meaningful tribute to those who perished, and provide a powerful educational tool for visitors. The Kigali Genocide Memorial, perched on a hill above the city, honors those who lost their lives and families. It is an intensely powerful and moving memorial, the final resting place for more than 250,000 victims of the Genocide against the Tutsi. Open 7 days a week, from 8am – 5pm, The Kigali Genocide Memorial is a guided experience. Visitors can choose to be guided by one of the staff or purchase the KGM digital guide which provides an audio-visual tour of the memorial. Along with the Memorial in Kigali, there are also eight other memorial and burial sites around the country, which are highly recommended if you are passing through the area.
1000 Hills Distillery
East Africa’s first craft distillery, 1000 Hills Distillery, was founded in 2014 by two gentlemen with a love of fine whisky, stunning views and a strong sense of pride in working with local communities. One of the reasons they chose Rwanda in addition to the amazing resilience of the country is that they could source materials locally, thus supporting micro and small businesses. Since their beginning they have produced six unique Made in Rwanda, triple distilled liquors, a Coffee Liqueur, Vodka, Light Spiced Rum, London Dry Gin, Macadamia Nut Liqueur and Single Malt Whisky! In addition, they also produce a variety of liquor-infused coffee. Unlike most alcohol companies, social impact is at the heart of the company! They have teamed up with leading international development agencies in Rwanda which are offering technical training to small holder farmers so they can use the distillers’ residues to increase their crop and livestock production. The distillery also works closely with local government to use the Methanol by-product to make a low-cost mosquito repellent. The distillery’s goal is to try and help as many people as they can with what they have.
There is a choice from five different tours lasting from one and half hours to two hours.
