Stone Town

Zanzibar is like no other place on earth, and Stone Town is like no other place in Zanzibar. The Island’s capital is a beautiful, enchanting town with an enticing vibrant and exotic atmosphere. Designated a UNESCO World Heritage site Stone Town is rich in culture and history, having changed little in the last 200 years. Visiting Stone Town is like stepping back in time – faded colonial buildings and high townhouses rub shoulders with the vibrant, bustling markets, where donkeys stroll and motorbikes zoom through the tiny narrow alleys – too narrow for cars. It’s an easy place to explore on foot, through the small winding alleys, bustling bazaars, palaces, mosques and grand Arab houses whose original owners vied with each other over the extravagance of their dwellings. This one-upmanship is particularly reflected in the brass-studded, carved wooden doors – there are more than 500 different examples of this craftsmanship. It is easy to spend many hours just wandering through the fascinating labyrinth of narrow streets and alleyways with tiny shops selling Zanzibari paintings, art, crafts and spices
