Sometimes a break from your routine is the very thing you need

“All I wanted to do now was to get back to Africa. We had not left it yet, but when I would wake in the night, I would lie, listening, homesick for it already”

– Ernest Hemingway, Green Hills of Africa

Tucked between the famous Amboseli and Tsavo ecosystems, with some of the best views of Mount Kilimanjaro, lies one of Kenya’s little known gems. The verdant Chyulu Hills are the youngest mountain ranges in the world, a rugged wilderness still showing signs of its volcanic origins. The string of dormant and extinct volcanoes have given rise to lush green hills, lava flows and craters, creating spectacular landscapes and breathtaking views. The inspiration for Ernest Hemingway’s book ‘Green Hills of Africa’, Chyulu Hills National Park is a pristine area of striking and diverse landscape. Emerald green hills, open vistas, dense forests and pools of water, it is remote and wild. The rugged jumble of ancient volcanic cones and craters consist of some of the deepest known lava tube caves in the world, a feature that attracts visitors from all over the world, especially geologists and volcanologists. Chyulu is home to a wonderful selection of wildlife, as well as over 400 species of birdlife.

What's Extra Special about The Chyulu Hills

Icons - Kilimanjaro & Tuskers

LARGE TUSKERS

Between Tsavo & Amboseli, the Chyulu Hills are part of the migratory routes for the Tuskers. ‘Tuskers’ are bull elephants whose tusks weigh in excess of 45 kilograms (100 pounds). The Chyulu Hills is possibly one of the best places to see Africa’s largest remaining Tuskers as they move between the breeding herds of Tsavo & Amboseli.

THE KISULA CAVES COMPLEX

When visiting Chyulu Hills, the chance to explore one of the deepest lava tubes in the world is not to be missed. The lava tubes are an attraction that has secured the Chyulu Hills on the world map. The numerous lava tube caves, collectively known as Kisula Caves, criss cross the depths of Chyulu Hills. The Upper Leviathan cave, at 11.5km long, is considered one of the longest and deepest lava tubes in the world.
