The Experience
One of the most rewarding safaris that one can experience is a safari in Southern Tanzania. We recommend a minimum of 7 nights on safari in Southern Tanzania, combining Ruaha National Park and Nyerere National Park (formerly known as The Selous).
Ruaha National Park is home to 10% of the worlds Lion population as well as the third largest population of Wild Dogs. Combining Ruaha with Nyerere, offers untouched serene wilderness as well as some incredibly diverse safari experiences.
Best time for Visiting Ruaha & Selous
The best time to experience this wonderful itinerary is between June – Mid October.
The dry season in Ruaha is from June – October, progressively getting hotter as the months go by. During the dry season, as the rivers dry up, animals tend to congregate towards the rivers to quench their thirst with the remaining little bits of water, making wildlife viewing much easier. The green season, which coincides with the rains from November – April. Ruaha turns a lush green, attracting a plethora of birds. Wildlife viewing gets harder during this time, and the weather can become quite humid.
Wildlife viewing in Selous Game Reserve is best from late June to October. This is the Dry season and wildlife is easier to spot since animals gather at water sources and vegetation is thinner. The scenery is lush and green in the Wet season, from October to May, but afternoons can be unbearably hot. Many lodges close from March through May.
