Samburu

The Original Safari Destination

Samburu

Samburu National Reserve in Northern Kenya is a dramatic landscape. Through the arid lands of the region, snakes the Ewaso Nyiro River, which is the lifeblood of the region. Drawing great numbers of wildlife to its banks and creating a green oasis in an otherwise parched landscape.

Samburu National Reserve and Buffalo Springs National Reserve are two parts of the same ecosystem. One on either bank of the Ewaso Nyiro River. In this arid region there are species found nowhere else in Kenya. The Special 5 – Gerenuk Gazelles, Somali Ostriches, Beisa Oryx, Grevy’s Zebra and Reticulated Giraffe. The landscape also provides excellent cover for predators, such as cheetahs, lions and leopards. And the river draws in large herds of elephants as well.

Samburu Maasai Culture

Samburu Maasai Culture

A semi-nomadic tribe, the Samburu are closely related to the Maasai Tribe. However they have not changed from their cultural ways as much as the Maasai Tribe have. Experiencing the vibrance of the Samburu people is a spectacular sight. The colors, their jewelry, their lives in an almost desert environment is quite something.

Exploring by Camel

A great way to experience the land is by going on a camel safari, giving the visitor a totally different and exhilarating safari experience. A peaceful journey through a spiritual and historical wilderness, through some of the most remote and scenically beautiful land. You can either walk into the bush with the Samburu tribesmen or ride the camels leading you on an adventure across wild and remote plains of Northern Kenya.

Best time to visit

This part of Kenya is very hot in general. The dry season from June to October is ideally a good time to visit as the temperatures tend to be a bit cooler. With limited water sources, only having the Ewaso Nj’iro river coursing through, animals tend to flock to the river to quench their thirst, making game viewing a bit easier during these months. During the rainy months, although usually the area doesn’t experience too much rain, the landscape transforms and the river flows beautifully. Lots of resident birds can be found as well as migratory birds.
