Shoebill Storks of Lake Albert
The birdlife in Semliki is pretty amazing, with over 440 species recorded. A real highlight is the chance to see the rare and prehistoric looking shoebill storks in the swampy wetlands at the edge of Lake Albert.
Chimpanzee Trekking
Currently, there is an ongoing Chimpanzee Habituation and Research Project in the area, and it is possible to trek with the research teams in search of chimps. However, the chances of seeing chimpanzees here are not as high as the Kibale Forest. Treks start at 8am and are around 4 hours long.
Sempaya Hot Springs
One of Semliki’s most popular attractions is the collection of hot springs at Sempaya. The hot springs are in a magical setting, in the midst of rainforest and palm trees. The largest spring is a geyser, which shoots up boiling water and steam upto 2 meters.
Game Drives
There are 11 mammal species unique to Semliki Valley. The real highlight to spot is the pygmy antelope and two flying squirrel species. The park also has 6 different species of bats. The valley is home to Central African species, such as water chevrons, forest buffalo and forest elephants, not typically seen in East Africa. Lions and leopards are also seen, but not with much regularity.
Best time to visit
Throughout Uganda, the Dry season from June to September and December to February is the best time to visit. These are the months when it’s easier to spot wildlife as they congregate around the water holes to quench their thirst.
During the Wet season It rains anytime from October to December and March to May and many roads become impassable and challenging to use.
