As a seasoned travel specialist, I’ve had my fair share of adventures across Kenya’s diverse landscapes. Yet, nothing quite prepared me for the enchantment that awaited me at Kalepo Camp. Nestled in the heart of Northern Samburuland, Kalepo isn’t just a luxury safari destination—it’s a gateway to genuine cultural immersion and unparalleled natural beauty.
The journey to Kalepo began with Scenic Air Safaris, a testament to luxury from the moment I stepped into their terminal. The scenic flight over Limuru, Abardares Mountains, and Lewa Wildlife Conservancy offered a breathtaking preview of the wonders to come. As we descended over Kalepo’s private airstrip, anticipation mingled with awe.
From the warm welcome at the airstrip to the delectable lunch by the river, every moment at Kalepo exuded hospitality and attention to detail. Rob and Storm Mason’s dedication to curating a unique experience was evident in every aspect of the camp.
The five spacious tents, each nestled along the riverbank, offered a sanctuary of comfort and tranquility. It was the thoughtful touches, from the luxurious beds to the quality amenities, that elevated the experience to extraordinary heights.
At Kalepo, culture isn’t just a facet of the experience—it’s the essence. The staff, predominantly from the local community, infused every interaction with authenticity and warmth. From bush walks to village visits, every moment offered a deeper understanding of Samburu culture and we had the opportunity to connect with the community on a personal level.
A highlight of any stay at Kalepo is the chance to visit nearby Samburu villages. Unlike staged tourist attractions, these visits offer an unfiltered glimpse into daily life in rural Kenya. As guests wander through the bomas (homes) and interact with locals going about their routines, they gain a profound appreciation for the resilience and ingenuity of the Samburu people. Guided by knowledgeable guides from Kalepo, I learnt about Samburu traditional customs, rituals, and the intricate social structure that defines Samburu society. Cultural immersion isn’t just about observation—it’s about active participation. I had a lovely opportunity to try my hand at traditional crafts with the Blacksmith artisans – trying to keep the fire alive! It’s an art in itself!
On the first evening, as the sun dipped below the horizon, we were spoilt with an array of and gin and tonic tastings in the riverbed, surrounded by nature’s symphony. It was a moment of pure magic and one of the memories that will forever be etched in my mind! The second evening, we were supposed to observe and participate in the Warrior Games, but the rain gods had other plans – however this turned into one of the most amazing cultural journeys for me – sitting in a car full of warriors and listening to their wonderful intimate Samburu Songs.
The culinary journey at Kalepo was a revelation. Fresh produce from their own ‘Shamba’ garden transformed each meal into a culinary delight. From the healthy options such as Mango Turmeric balls, grilled fish and salads to the indulgent salted caramel brownies, fresh honeycomb and hot cross buns (as it was Easter) – oh, the food is delicious!
I have to say my connection with Kalepo extends beyond a mere visit—it’s a testament to the transformative power of travel. From Rob & Storm’s initial vision of Kalepo (which I had been speaking to them since before their opening) to the reality of experiencing Kalepo firsthand, it surpassed all my expectations. I truly feel, Kalepo offers a place where families and friends can genuinely connect and reconnect with themselves and each other amidst the splendor of nature and the richness of culture.
As I reflect on my time at Kalepo, I’m filled with gratitude for the memories created and the connections forged. It’s more than a safari destination—it’s a haven of magic and wonder. And for anyone embarking on a safari adventure, Kalepo is not just a stop—it’s an essential part of the journey, where every moment is etched in the tapestry of unforgettable experiences.
