The Experience
The trek starts at Empakaai Crater in the Ngorongoro Conservation area, which has really got to be one of the most beautiful craters that you can fly camp at. Then you begin your two day trek, fly camping in-between to Lake Natron. Hike through the Ngorongoro Conservation area into the community land, where all the children you pass will be the most excited faces you’ll encounter!
The hike on day 2 takes you along the edge of the Rift Valley escarpment, it feels like you’re hiking through scenery that you would imagine would be on the moon, all while having the active volcano – Ol Doinyo Lengai in your sights!
For those of you who are active and really adventurous, you can add a hike up Ol Donyo Lengai too.
Once you get to Lake Natron, you can spend a few days here enjoying the adventures on offer.
Best time for the Trek
The best time we feel to experience this trek is during the ‘winter’ season in East Africa, which typically would be July – Mid November.
We did this trek in early November and had the most magical weather to really enjoy the experience.
